Parkinson Society Maritime Region (PSMR) is the voice of Maritimers living with Parkinson’s. We are the only registered not-for-profit Parkinson’s organization serving this population. Our mission is to “Ease the burden; Find a cure” through support services, education, advocacy and research.
The Society is comprised of four staff at the Halifax Regional Office, a part-time program coordinator in New Brunswick, and volunteers from across the Maritimes. We are governed by a Board of Directors.
PROGRAMS AND SERVICES
We offer a number of programs and services to people living with Parkinson's, caregivers, family members, and health care professionals. Including:
TOLL- FREE INFORMATION & SUPPORT LINE
The Society’s Information and Support Line is where to turn after diagnosis. Callers can speak with knowledgeable staff who understand living with Parkinson’s and who can offer support, direction and information. Anyone curious about what services are available in their community, or who simply has a question about the disease is also encouraged to call us and learn more. 1-800-663-2468.
Groups are formed to provide local support for those in the area living with Parkinson’s and operate on guiding principles of trust, acceptance, respect and compassion. In general our groups are made up of people living with Parkinson’s and family members – though everyone is welcome to attend.
The groups are not intended as therapy groups, still many find comfort in talking with fellow members and learning from one another. In general, our groups are upbeat, with the goal of sharing anecdotes, experience, resource information and good humour. Speakers on a variety of topics are common.

INFORMATION KITS AND RESOURCE LIBRARY
Information kits are available to anyone interested in learning more about Parkinson’s disease, which include material on the progression of Parkinson’s, medication management, exercises for people living with Parkinson’s and more. Kits can be downloaded or can be mailed, free of charge.
Two resource libraries (Halifax, Charlottetown) provide books, videos, and DVDs on Parkinson’s and on care for those with the condition. Each operates like a public library, where materials are loaned to anyone interested, free of charge. Hundreds of titles are available; contact us for more information
SPECIAL EVENTS, WORKSHOPS AND FUNDRAISERS
The Parkinson SuperWalk is our biggest fundraiser. Held in communities across Canada every September, SuperWalk has raised over $25 million to fund vital research, education, support and advocacy since 1990.
Throughout the year, our chapters and support groups organize several other fundraisers including porridge and pancake breakfasts, wing-eating challenges, dinners, and much more. We also hold education workshops for health care practitioners, and public information sessions, designed to raise public awareness of Parkinson’s disease.
